"Iskenderun: Pro-Seismic City Design"
This international competition for urban planning and architecture students is a very special one because although it involves the development of architectural and urban planning efforts, it is essentially about the strength of the heart, soul, spirit, passion and human compassion, which mobilize academic and professional rationality and logic, to reconstruct the space of Turkish cities devastated by the last major earthquake in 2023, through the specific study of Iskenderun.
After the 2023 Kahramanmaraş earthquake, which registered a magnitude of 7.8 Mw and has been classified as the deadliest in Turkey in the last 100 years, the Faculty of Architecture at TED University in Ankara gave us a unique opportunity. We are excited to announce the second iteration of ICAUS: an international competition for architecture and urban planning students titled “Iskenderun: Pro-Seismic City Design.”
The fundamental idea of this international architecture competition is to build a fresh, creative, innovative, free, and spontaneous conceptual seismic solution for the reconstruction of a city that has been devastated by the Kahramanmaraş earthquake and a subsequent tsunami, without professional or economic distortions.
We encourage students to envision a new Pro-Seismic-Resilient city—one that harmonizes with its geography, adapts to its challenges, and embraces earthquake and tsunami resilience. The aim is to observe the territory and respect the natural movements caused by geological activity, creating a city that works with these dynamics rather than against them.
